The city

Where it sits, and what it is read against.

Trichy sits in the Cauvery plain, where a single rock outcrop rises abruptly out of an otherwise flat city and the Cauvery and Kollidam rivers divide around Srirangam. It is also a working education and engineering city, with a technical workforce and a fabrication base that most landmark sites do not have on their doorstep. A wheel here is read against rock and water rather than against a skyline, and it is read by residents far more often than by visitors.

Cultural research

Every source below changed something in the design.

Cultural material is used here as design logic — geometry, proportion, circulation, material and climate response — never as applied surface decoration. No temple, mosque, monument, government building or sacred object is copied, and no religious imagery appears on capsules, tickets, merchandise or commercial space.

The Rockfort outcrop
Set the rule that the structure should appear to grow out of a mass rather than stand on a slab. The base is a stepped stone plinth, and the support legs spring from it instead of meeting the ground at a point.
The Cauvery and Kollidam river systems
Fixed the horizontal datum. The public realm is organised as long low terraces stepping toward water, and the lighting reads cool across the wheel and warm at the base, in the way river light sits under a warm sky.
Tamil stone architecture
Gave the boarding pavilion its proportion and vertical rhythm — a repeated bay with a strong base, shaft and cap — expressed in plain stone and concrete, with no carved figuration and no facade copied from any building.
Chola-era bronze craftsmanship
Set the metal register. Bronze is used sparingly and only where a hand touches the building: handrails, boarding thresholds, capsule door frames and signage. It patinates rather than being kept bright.
Kolam geometry
Used as circulation and paving logic rather than decoration — a continuous looped route that never dead-ends, translated into the queue layout, the pavilion ceiling grid and the paving joint pattern.
Temple-city rhythm
Informed the arrival sequence: a long approach, a compression, then a release into open space at the boarding threshold. It is a spatial rhythm, not an iconographic reference.
Trichy's educational and industrial identity
Justified making the structure legible. The spoke and rim system is left exposed and explained on the public realm, so the wheel doubles as a piece of visible engineering for a city that trains engineers.
Design direction

Rock and River

Trichy's landmark is already a rock. A wheel that competes with it loses. This concept instead sets up a conversation: a permanent, carved, quiet base and a light, precise wheel above it, so the two masses read as different orders of the same landscape.

The Eye is placed to hold the river in view from the top of the rotation and the rock in view from the boarding level, which means the arrival sequence and the ride sequence show a visitor two different cities.

Everything below the hub is heavy and made of stone. Everything above it is thin, tensioned and metallic. That single decision drives the structure, the pavilion, the lighting and the landscape.

Structural expression

How the wheel stands up

  • A cable-spoke wheel: a slim rim carried on paired tension spokes rather than a deep truss, so the wheel reads as a line against the sky rather than a mass.
  • Twin A-frame support legs spring from a stepped stone plinth rather than from a visible pile cap, so the transfer to ground happens inside a landscape element instead of alongside it.
  • The rim is a deep lattice at the outer chord and a plain chord inside it, giving the silhouette a fine texture that is readable at a kilometre and resolves into structure at a hundred metres.
  • Concept only. Diameter, rim depth, spoke arrangement and foundation type follow the geotechnical, wind and seismic case for the actual site, which has not been established.
Boarding pavilion

Station architecture

  • A single-storey pavilion of repeated stone bays, deep enough to shade the queue completely at the hottest hour rather than partially.
  • Vertical rhythm is the whole architectural idea: a repeated bay proportioned from Tamil stone architecture, without any carved or figurative reference.
  • The ceiling is a continuous looped grid derived from kolam logic, which also organises the lighting and the services runs.
  • Boarding happens at a raised threshold reached by ramp and lift together, so no visitor is routed differently from any other.
Capsule

Capsule and visitor experience

  • Capsules are calm and stone-toned inside, with bronze door frames and a low bench that leaves the floor clear.
  • Glazing is specified for heat and glare before it is specified for clarity — this is an inland city with long, hot, bright afternoons.
  • One capsule position in every rotation set is configured for wheelchair boarding without a separate queue.
  • No religious iconography, deity imagery or sacred motif appears on any capsule, ticket, surface or merchandise.
Lighting

Lighting identity

  • Warm bronze at the base, cool river light across the wheel. The transition happens across the support legs, so the structure appears to change temperature as it rises.
  • The rim carries a slow, low-amplitude sequence rather than chase effects — it should read as a lit structure, not as a sign.
  • Downward light in the public realm, so the river edge stays dark enough to be worth looking at.
Landscape

Landscape and public realm

  • Long, low terraces stepping toward the water, doubling as informal seating and as flood-tolerant edge.
  • Heat-conscious planting: dense canopy over every waiting and gathering area, and hard surfaces limited to where movement actually happens.
  • A continuous shaded route from the drop-off to the boarding threshold, so nobody stands in the sun to reach the wheel.
Commercial

Commercial activation

  • Shaded gathering ground that works as public space when the wheel is closed.
  • Local food, organised as a market edge rather than a food court.
  • A performance terrace sized for cultural programming, oriented to the river.
  • River-oriented viewing terraces that do not require a ticket.
