Where it sits, and what it is read against.
Chennai meets the Bay of Bengal along one of the longest urban beaches anywhere, and the city's public life has always used that edge in the evening rather than the middle of the day. It is a Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam city with a strong performance calendar, and simultaneously an automotive, electronics and software manufacturing centre. Its climate is hot, humid and cyclone-exposed, with a north-east monsoon that arrives late in the year.

Every source below changed something in the design.
Cultural material is used here as design logic — geometry, proportion, circulation, material and climate response — never as applied surface decoration. No temple, mosque, monument, government building or sacred object is copied, and no religious imagery appears on capsules, tickets, merchandise or commercial space.
- The Marina coast and the Bay of Bengal
- Set the horizontality. The pavilion is a long, low, shaded roof parallel to the shore, and nothing on the site rises except the wheel itself.
- Kolam geometry
- Provides the interlace rule for the hub, the station ceiling, the paving and the wayfinding: a continuous line looping around a fixed point grid. It is used as a generative system, and never as applied ornament or clutter.
- Tamil bronze and stone
- Sets the material register — bronze at hand height, stone underfoot, both left to weather rather than kept new.
- Carnatic rhythm
- Governs the lighting. The rim sequence follows a fixed cycle of stresses and rests rather than a continuous sweep, so the light has metre rather than motion.
- Bharatanatyam precision
- Informed the discipline of the spoke geometry: positions are exact, held and repeated, with no informal or organic variation anywhere in the structure.
- Chennai's automotive, technology and cultural industries
- Justified a visible engineering programme on the public realm and a performance space at the coast edge, so the destination serves the city's two economies at once.
- Coastal wind and the north-east monsoon
- Drove the roof form, the drainage strategy and the decision to make the queue fully sheltered on three sides while staying open to the sea.
Kolam and Coast
Chennai's version of the platform is about rhythm, not mass. The site is long and thin, parallel to the shore, and the architecture is one continuous shaded roof with the wheel set behind it.
The distinguishing structural move is the spoke field. Instead of straight radial lines the spokes are arranged as an interlace — two counter-rotating sets crossing at a fixed grid of points, taken directly from kolam logic. From a distance the wheel reads as a woven disc rather than as a bicycle wheel, and that is what separates its silhouette from the other five.
Everything else is deliberately quiet: one roof, one material palette, one accent colour used sparingly.
Kolam is a domestic and, in places, a devotional practice. It is used here as geometry and circulation logic only — no pattern is reproduced as a decorative surface, and none appears on capsules, tickets or merchandise.
How the wheel stands up
- A veranda frame: the wheel's landward support is integrated into the long roof structure, so the pavilion and the support system are the same piece of engineering.
- An interlaced spoke field — two counter-rotating sets crossing at a fixed point grid — giving the wheel a woven appearance at silhouette distance.
- A rhythmic rim: cabin positions and rim lacing follow a repeating stress-and-rest pattern rather than an even one.
- Concept only. Cyclone wind loading, corrosion strategy, coastal setback and foundation type follow the engineering and coastal study for the actual site, which has not been established. An interlaced spoke field changes the load path and would be tested before anything else.
Station architecture
- One long, low, shaded roof parallel to the shore, drawn from coastal veranda proportion and Tamil spatial rhythm.
- Open to the sea on the long side, sheltered on the other three, so the queue has a view and still survives a monsoon evening.
- The ceiling is an interlaced kolam grid that also organises lighting and services.
- Stone underfoot, bronze at hand height, a light roof structure above — three materials, no more.
Capsule and visitor experience
- Cool, restrained interiors in sea grey and off-white, with a single coral accent at the door threshold.
- Heat, glare, humidity and salt drive the specification: laminated solar-control glazing, sealed fixings and marine-grade fittings.
- Condensation and ventilation are designed for, because a humid coastal capsule fogs before it overheats.
- Level boarding at a designated position in every rotation set, from the same veranda as everyone else.
Lighting identity
- Rhythmic sequences derived from musical metre: a fixed cycle of stresses and rests around the rim, at walking pace.
- Warm bronze at the veranda, cool light on the wheel, so the roof and the structure read as separate systems.
- No nightclub effects, no colour cycling, no beat-reactive lighting. The rhythm is fixed and slow.
Landscape and public realm
- Wave-shaped landscape edges that hold sand, absorb storm water and give the promenade an informal seating line.
- Shaded promenades running the length of the site, planted with salt-tolerant species in raised beds.
- Monsoon drainage designed as visible surface channels rather than as buried pipework.
Commercial activation
- Coastal interpretation — how the shore works, what the monsoon does — sited as free public content.
- Tamil food along the veranda edge, open to the promenade rather than enclosed.
- A performance space at the coast edge for the city's music and dance calendar.
- Family experiences and a design and craft edge, both sited so they work when the wheel is closed.

Climate response
- Hot and humid: shade plus air movement, never shade alone.
- Cyclone exposure: the roof, the canopies and the wheel's operating envelope are all governed by the extreme wind case.
- North-east monsoon: surface drainage is sized to be seen working, and the queue stays usable through it.
Sustainability approach
- Marine-grade durability as the primary environmental decision, because replacement is the real coastal carbon cost.
- Salt-tolerant native planting and dune-edge stabilisation instead of imported ornamental landscape.
- A public promenade and performance space that work without a ticket, so the site earns its coastal frontage.
Accessibility approach
- The veranda is level for its whole length — the accessible route and the main route are the same route.
- Level boarding at a designated capsule position in every rotation set.
- Tactile and high-contrast wayfinding tuned for bright coastal glare.
- Shaded rest points along the promenade and inside the queue, at intervals rather than at the ends.
Mobility connections
- Pedestrian arrival along the shore promenade as the primary route.
- Set-down and coach parking held behind the roof, away from the beach edge.
- Intended to connect to bus and suburban rail by a shaded pedestrian route.
